The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Scheme was founded in 1956 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. His aim was to give the young people of the time a challenge to go out and experience different physical activities, meeting people and making new friends, become more self-sufficient, to help others and develop new skills. All the above being an important part of a young person’s development and preparing them for their future and are very relevant today. This is continued by the new Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward who has taken on his father’s legacy.
The DofE Award is open to all students in year 9 and above at North Kesteven Academy. We are currently offering the bronze award with plans to offer silver and gold in the future.
There are four sections to the bronze award:
Self-development, motivation and resilience are important skills needed to complete the award.
| Physical Skills | Improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness. |
| Volunteering | Supporting individuals or giving back to the community. |
| Skill | Developing practical and social skills and personal interests. |
| Expedition | Planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey. |
What is involved and timings:
| Physical Skills | 3 months |
| Volunteering | 3 months |
| Skill | 3 months |
| Expedition |
There is an additional 3 months in one of the above that will also need completing. Commitment is key here and students need to participate regularly and be committed to their DofE during this time. They will also need to keep a log of the activities and gather evidence such as photographs. They will be provided with a log that will support them with this. There will also be weekly meetings after school to support students and teach them the various skills needed to complete their awards.
Participant will receive their award packs directly to their homes and they will be the student’s responsibility to look after. They will also be set up on to an online account which is where students keep a log of their activities.
If further support is needed, please contact the Academy’s Duke of Edinburgh Managers Mr Prime and Mr Riley.
