NK Academy Thanks Dedicated Volunteer

NK Academy Thanks Dedicated Volunteer for Vital Contribution

We are recognising the work of one of our dedicated volunteers for his contribution to the school during Volunteers’ Week (1st to 7th June).

Despite being unable to work for some time owing to health problems, Andrew South, 49, is now a volunteer at the academy and dedicates 18 hours per week to help with jobs ranging from maintaining the school’s eco garden to DIY tasks.

Jo Tunnicliffe, Headteacher at North Kesteven Academy, said: “Andrew attended an interview with us back in February for the post of caretaker, and although he was not successful, we were sufficiently impressed to offer him a week’s work experience over the February half term.

“We hoped that this would give him some much-needed experience and open up other opportunities.”

During his interview, Andrew spotted the school’s eco garden – a project which had been cultivated by staff and students a few years ago. Having not been touched for a few years, the garden was completely overgrown – and Andrew volunteered to come back in and restore it in his own time.

Andrew said: “I’m delighted to have been given this opportunity by NK Academy and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the work I’ve undertaken so far. I’ve loved transforming the academy’s eco garden – it’s made a real difference to the area and has become an enjoyable place for both the students and staff to enjoy. It’s nice knowing that I have contributed to that.”

Jo added: “Our eco garden was originally set up by the student leadership team to provide a haven for wildlife, a quiet restful space and on occasions a teaching space for science lessons.

“Andrew has done an amazing job to reestablish the area and has braved the weather, six-foot nettles and bee stings to do so! In line with Volunteers’ Week and on behalf of everyone at NK Academy, we’d like to thank Andrew for being such a helping hand!”
