North Kesteven Academy SEND Information Report
The Learning Support Department aims to identify and provide for a wide-range of special educational needs under the 4 headings Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties and Sensory and Physical needs, as stated in the SEND code of practice 0-25 years.
Students who are experiencing difficulties, not making the expected progress or where parents are concerned about their child’s progress will be raised by the relevant Progress Manager at Student Referral Meetings. Students will then complete some assessments to allow the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator to identify their needs.
Where appropriate students will be placed on the SEND Register so that all teachers are aware of their issues and can, where necessary, give extra help in the classroom and differentiate the class and homework set. Where appropriate programmes of intervention will be put in place to meet individual student needs and ensure they are making the required progress.
All students on the SEND register will have an individual student profile which will be available for all teachers. We encourage parents to be involved in the writing and reviewing of the student profiles for parents and staff to discuss the profiles at various points throughout the year. Where we identify that students are still having significant difficulties in any of the 4 areas, despite the additional support from teachers, programmes of intervention and other school based support, we may consult other specialist teachers/services. Parents are always encouraged to be involved in this process so that they fully understand the decisions made and the next steps we are taking to ensure students have the best opportunities to allow them to overcome their difficulties and reach their full potential.
1. What should I do if I think my child has special educational needs?
You could contact your child’s form tutor who will listen to your concerns and discuss these with the relevant Progress Manager.

2. How will the school respond to my concern?
Concerns will be taken to the fortnightly Student Referral Meeting (SRM) and discussed with the Progress Manager, SENDCo and Student Services Manager. A decision will be made about the next steps/actions to be taken. You will then be contacted by the relevant member of school staff to either discuss this further. This can be done over the phone or we can arrange a meeting so that we can share the schools recommendations. You may be asked to give your consent if any assessments are required. Initial assessments will usually be completed by school staff.
3. How will the school decide if my child needs extra support?
In the SRM we will look at and discuss your child’s progress and depending on the nature of the concerns raised may consider one or more of the following:-
Assessments/testing looking at a range of things such as reading age, spelling age, numeracy, auditory skill, processing speed and memory
Contacting all subjects teachers to ask for an update or to complete a cause for concern questionnaire
Observation of a lesson
Discussion with you and your child to get their views
4. What will the school do to support my child?
Once we have completed the relevant steps in question 3 we will discuss in the next SRM the best support for your child. If necessary your child may be placed on the SEND register if we feel that the support required is additional to, or otherwise different from, the educational provision made generally for children of the same age. We have a number of interventions available which are delivered by the SEND team. Each intervention has a plan which can be shared with parents so that they understand the aim of the intervention, how long it will last and what it involves. At the end of the intervention the SEND team will review the progress your child has made and report back to the SENDCo for further discussion at SRM if necessary. We may complete an individual student profile so that their subject teachers understand how to provide the best support for your child during lessons. This may include things such as differentiating class and homework, providing key words or attendance at homework club. You will be invited in to school so that you can be involved in the creation of the student profile. If placed on the SEND register, your child’s progress will be reviewed by the SENDCo at each assessment cycle to monitor that they are making the expected progress.
5. Who will support my child in school?
All students receive daily support from their form tutor. In addition to this their class teachers support all students in their lessons. If the students have SEND they are also closely monitored by the Progress Mangers and SENDCo. The Student Support Team can also provide support for emotional issues.
6. What training and experience do staff have for the additional support my child needs?
Within the SEND team we have staff with a wide range of skills, experience training & qualifications. The SENDCo also acts as the schools Designated Teacher for Looked After Children.
There are a number of teaching assistants, 3 members of the team are qualified as Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) and deliver subject specific interventions to groups and individual students. The remainder of the team all have teaching assistant qualifications and/or experience and support students within timetabled lessons to ensure that they are able to access a broad and balanced curriculum.
7. Who else might be involved in supporting my child?
North Kesteven Academy work closely with the following outside agencies/specialists to ensure we meet individual children’s needs:-
Health services – occupational therapy, physiotherapy, school nursing specialist nursing, CAMHS
Speech and Language Specialists
Social Care – including social workers, targeted youth and all other family support services within social care

8. What support will be there for my child’s emotional and social well being?
In addition to the support of the SEND team North Kesteven Academy also has a team of Student Services officers who can offer additional support to your child. They offer the opportunity for an additional adult in school for your child to check in with and discuss any worries or concerns. This is where your child should report any bullying or difficulties they may be having during social time. At North Kesteven Academy we have a proactive attendance team whose aim is to ensure that all pupils achieve maximum possible attendance and that any problems are acted upon as quickly as possible. We offer support and advice to parents and carers and encourage close communication between all those involved with students both in school and at home, which includes any external agencies.
If your child has medical needs they will have a Health Care Plan which you will be asked to contribute to. If your child has regular medication then this can be stored in and administered from the medical room. North Kesteven Academy have weekly support from behaviour specialists Need Bright Solutions. They work with individual children and also work closely with the SENDCo to develop strategies for teaching staff to support children with emotional or behavioural difficulties. This support will be used for any students at risk of exclusion from school.
9. How will my child be involved in the process and be able to contribute their views?
Teaching assistants will meet with your child at points throughout the year to discuss how they are getting on, talk about any interventions they are involved in and encourage them to be involved in writing their student profile where appropriate.
10. How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?
NK believe in high quality teaching and matching the curriculum to children’s needs through inclusive classroom practice. Wave 1 intervention will include differentiation of tasks, additional adult support, seating for learning, peer support, use of ICT/laptops in the classroom.
11. What opportunities will there be for me to discuss my child’s attainment and achievement? How will I know how well my child is progressing?
All children will receive 3 assessments per year in their student diary as well as a written progress report. Any issues/problems or positives will be recorded by teaching staff in your child’s diary. In addition to this you will have the opportunity to meet with your child’s key worker and can discuss how regularly you would like them to contact you. You can request a meeting with the students form tutor or with a member of the Learning support team if you would find this useful.
12. How does the school know how well my child is doing?
Your child’s primary school will provide us with information about KS2 attainment as part of the transition process. In addition to this Y7s will complete CATs within the first term. Individual departments may also complete baseline tests on entry to ensure we have accurate information about your child’s current levels. Progress will be tracked by subject teachers, Heads of Department, Progress Managers and if your child is on the SEND register, the SENDCo. Children who are on the SEND register will complete standardised assessments in KS3 and KS4 to measure progress and also ensure we provide the correct access arrangements for your child if they are entitled to this for any tests/exams.
13. How will my child be included in activities outside the classroom including school trips?
NK is an inclusive secondary school and no child will be refused access to any activities or trips because of their Special Educational Need or Disability. All children will be given the opportunity to take letters or attend meetings about trips or activities. Additional adult support can be provided for trips, activities and clubs that children wish to take part in. Where parents are concerned about their child attending clubs/trips or activities, this can be discussed with the SENDCo to overcome any barriers or difficulties. If together we decide that a particular trip or activity would pose a health and safety risk, we can discuss alternatives of equal educational value.
14. How accessible is the school environment?
The school has automatic doors throughout the site for wheelchair access. There is lift access to the 1st and 2nd floors in the main block. We have several disabled toilets across the site including a hygiene suite. There are disabled changing facilities within the sports centre.
15. How will the school prepare and support my child to join the school?
North Kesteven Academy sees transition of students with SEND as vitally important. The SENDCo contacts all primary SENDCos to arrange a visit to the primary school to attend any EHCP reviews where possible. There is the sharing of information between the primary SENDCo’s and NK SENDCo. In the summer term at ‘Transition Club’ is run after school for any student who benefit from additional visits to the school. This allows the students to meet some of the staff and other students joining NKS. There is the opportunity to complete a specially designed transition booklet and for parents to attend a parents session to ask any questions.
16. How will the school prepare and support my child to transfer to a new setting/school/college?
The SENDCo and Progress Manger for Year 9 will be involved in the planning, discussion and options interview in Y9. We will take time to listen to you and your child as well as making
suggestions/recommendations for your child’s next steps. NK has a careers advisor who will meet with your child to talk about his/her interests and discuss the options available to them post 16. You will receive a copy of the notes from this discussion and the opportunity to meet with the careers advisor and or SENDCo if you would like to.
17. How can I be involved in supporting my child?
Parents will be involved in the writing of their child’s student profile where there is a section to record how parents can help at home. Basic things such as helping with organisation and ensuring your child has the correct kit and equipment are very important. The SEND team can make suggestions about possible interventions and programmes to complete at home.
18. How can I access support for myself and my family?
